    I don't think Nye should spend a lot of time in set-piece debates, but that doesn't make this one a mistake. And I don't see how bad the worst case could be. Heck, if Nye proclaimed that Ham had convinced him, how many people would notice?

    My experience is that folks do indeed respond to derision and laughter. You can really shake people up when you laugh at their beliefs.
    Yes, you can, if they want to have your good opinion, as most people by default do. Then they can deal with it by changing their mind about the issue, or changing their mind about you, or just moving on. Any of those is a possible outcome, and the odds depend on the circumstances.

    I think there is a lot to be said for laughing at the ridiculous. But it can be tricky when your target audience (i.e., the potential persuadables) contains good people who honestly don't know why it is ridiculous. Often the best play isn't literally to laugh at it, but just to obliterate or fatally undermine it.
