But at 20 percent efficiency

I = 700 W/m^2
P(nameplate) = 1e12 W

I get

2*P/(I*e) = 1.4e10 m^2 or around 14,000 square kilometers.

I'll buy that and won't quibble about the prior comment.  There is abundant open space for this in the west. Where there are space constraints in the east there are plenty of rooftops, plus wind, off- and on-shore.  The point is this technology is available now at reasonable cost.  Fusion is still in the research stage.

• I'm not saying don't grow solar(0+ / 0-)

I'm saying that it's anyone's guess as to whether or not solar can grow quickly enough to replace enough existing and future capacity to forestall fusion's inevitable arrival.

• How can you deem it inevitable?(0+ / 0-)

How can you be so sure it is even possible?

• Yeah!(0+ / 0-)

Just get a pea-size black hole, add a few tons of hydrogen, and voila!  Only problem is
(a) obtaining said black hole, and
(b) keeping it from sucking in everything else on earth
but other than that, what could go wrong...

• Not even the sun depends on (0+ / 0-)

such esoteric engineering.  Neither do thermonuclear explosives, for that matter.

• the sun's fusion does depend on gravity(0+ / 0-)

If you are claiming the sun as a reason why fusion could be made to work on earth, just how does that apply?

• By realizing that(0+ / 0-)

Electromagnetism is 10^38 times stronger than gravitation, and using that instead.

• 10^36.(0+ / 0-)

Excuse me.

• A case of comparing apples to oranges (0+ / 0-)

if there ever was one.  If that comparison had any validity, all the nuclei involved would have long since fused with abandon.  As it is, most of them remain unpersuaded by your argument, as do I.

• By what mechanism?(0+ / 0-)

Gravity is monopolar. EM is not.

• my point exactly(0+ / 0-)

not comparable

• So let me get this straight(0+ / 0-)

Running a turbine and tidal hydropower are incomparable because one uses the EM interaction while the other depends on gravitation?  If so, then this exchange just borders on the pedantic.

• Forestall? How about Accelerate!(1+ / 0-)

Research funding has been choked off. These large facilities that took decades to build couldn't afford to pay the electric bills to run their experiments. It needs funding. \$3 Billion a year for 10 years is a cheap federal investment.  Just eliminate tax incentives for oil companies.

• More importantly(0+ / 0-)

Alcator C-mod is a pretty important feeder of research that will support ITER development and operations. We can pay the piper now or we can pay more in interest.
