getting worse as it goes...I refuse to go non-union so now must self-perform the work since I can pay the wages and compete against the non-union.

we are small with low overhead and used to be able to compete...the union put all its eggs in the high-tech industry and ceded the light-comercial work.

high-tech has left the country...the non-union contractors have increased their skills and man-power over the last do things wrong enough times and you eventually learn.

now the union has a plan...but since I'm one of only a couple small shops left...they asked if we could hire a few non-union plumbers...I can't help them because even at the reduced wages I can't beat the non-union...they've gotten so big...they've split into many shops competing against each's too late.

in the next couple months we may need to shut the doors and go to work for a big shop...the only union companies doing any work.

I haven't had a paycheck in almost a year...the company can only pay for gas and insurances.

so no NN14 for us...but if ever in Indiana...we will seek you out.

We are not broke, we are being robbed...but we can fight back...#KosKatalogue

    •  I didn't want to ask... (3+ / 0-)

because I was worried that the answer would resemble this. During breakfast a few months ago with one of my union thug friends and his wife (a teacher), they spoke of hard times earlier in their marriage when there was no work here (he's IBEW member). He had to find work out of state and was gone for months at a time until the economy recovered somewhat here. So I am glad to read that you have an option to work locally for a large union shop.

Attending Netroots Nation is a splurge for so many couples, particularly when it isn't scheduled somewhere local. You and remembrance will definitely be missed in '14, but better years will come along, hopefully sooner rather than later.

    •  Bless you for sticking to your principles. (3+ / 0-)

I am sorry things are so tough for you. I hope everything works out well.

I believe unions are one of the keys to getting out of the current state of inequality. The decline of unions has been one of the key reasons for wage stagnation. Maybe people are finally begin to realize that, but it probably won't help your immediate circumstances.

As a union teacher who has seen our rights taken away by Republican control of state government, I can feel some of your pain.

People need to wake up. And soon.

      All the best to you.
