  •  I stopped listening to one local (4+ / 0-)

talk host when he started musing whether Jonathan Martin was the "gay athlete" everyone was talking about being ready to come out. (That was before the same host's meltdown about women in the sports media business.) The culture of bullying and "hazing" in the NFL is probably a major reason gay players are reluctant to come out before they retire.

I still think that the NHL is going to be the first league with an out player (Jason Collins notwithstanding, until he gets picked up by another club), thanks to the work of the You Can Play Project. The one thing that concerns me is the religious culture in many sports locker rooms, with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and other groups. There's nothing coercive about it, but many players show up to the pre-game prayer sessions for the camaraderie. Management would have to keep a close tab to make sure that out athletes weren't subject to harassment by ultra-fundamentalists.

MLB had a gay player many years ago where it was an open secret amongst the teammates but they didn't really give a rat's was management that made a big stink about it.

If you ever get a chance to see "Out: The Glenn Burke Story", I highly encourage it -- and it's a big reason why I hate Tommy Lasorda even more than I was obligated to as a San Francisco Giants fan.

There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- goddammit, you've got to be kind. -- Kurt Vonnegut
