  •  There Is No Meaning to the Concept of a Nye Win (11+ / 0-)

in that exhibition. I'd say there is no way for it to happen, but the truth is that there is no "it" that can happen.

It's a stupid exercise because the creation side can say anything. It can use any rules to put its words together and claim truth, and to analyze Nye's words to demonstrate falsehood.

Evolutionists claim that evolution is a scientific fact, but they almost always lose scientific debates with creationist scientists.
Yep, the creationist side wins these debates at their very announcement.

    •  If it ends civilly (4+ / 0-)

      with food for thought,

      on both sides,

I would consider it a "cultural" Win.

    •  Gotta agree. Nye is on a fool's errand (8+ / 0-)

There is no way to argue science with those who subjugate science to a very narrow belief system that supersedes the rules that honest scientists set for themselves.

    •  it is like arguing race with a WP or WS type (3+ / 0-)

No matter what you say, they will insist that race is a valid taxonomy for describing the various "species" of humans and that there is a marked difference between these races.  However they also insist that biracial humans are sterile hybrids (which would mean each race would have a different number of chromosomes) or even that the races can breed at all (confusing "race" with the taxonomical "family)

It is simply not worth the effort

Look where it's taking place, in the Creation Museum for crying out loud, not a public auditorium or in a TV studio.  How's that ever gonna look like Bill wins, with the crowd booing him every time he opens his mouth, with his opponent playing gotcha with him to the cheering of the crowd?

Creationists love gotcha shit.  They even came out with a children's book full of phrases to hurl at teachers and museum guides.  In it, the child is instructed to say, upon hearing about the great age of the Earth, "Were you there?"

Many people don't know enough of the details of how our knowledge of deep time came about to answer effectively off the cuff.  Here's my answer:  "No I wasn't, but uranium and lead were."

So that's what Bill's up against.  He'll be booed and heckled from the audience, he'll be drowned out.  That's what the clips on the news will show.

      That's a win for science?

      •  he is indeed (6+ / 0-)

        going into the Lion's Den.

        Hope he keeps his composure.

        I've seen him "debate" some Climate Denialists once;

It seemed to me, he got the best of most of the exchanges.

Facts, can do that for a person.

Not having this "debate" at a neutral location is a very poor choice.

By simply showing up there and performing in this so called debate lends credence to this goofy ass museum.

as any liberal politician going on a Fox News show. They think they'll do fine because facts, but the FN host holds all the cards -the mic, the lighting, the script and the editing are all in Fox's control.

        A fool's errand indeed. I hope at least he'll be well-paid.

    •  Sophistry is the reason . . (0+ / 0-)

      1. (Philosophy)
      a. a method of argument that is seemingly plausible though actually invalid and misleading
      b. the art of using such arguments
      2. subtle but unsound or fallacious reasoning
      3. an instance of this; sophism

I once had an opportunity to spend a weekend (clam digging) with a very religious fundementalist friend of mine.  Whatever scientific reasons I came up with for this or that belief or observation about the world or science or history he would counter with: "It is that way because God wanted it to be that way."

      Not a wasted weekend, insightful.

No way Bill Nye can win when you can define reality.

      As Humpty Dumpty said:

“When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’

’The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’

’The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.”
