this tin-foil hat conspiracy crap. Doesn't anyone check Snopes these days? C'mon Kossacks! Do your research before blindly accepting recycled garbage. This story is shot down every time it pops up; it's just the people who never bothered to double-check before they repost that keep it going...

    •  snopes.com is a "Barb" and a "Dave". (6+ / 1-)

They've done some really good work, but have only a handful (5 by searching "fukushima") of applicable debunkings.

      1. a wave map peddled as a radiation map
      2. specific reporting of recent steam issue
      3. giant mutant hornets in Nebraska
      4. another fallout map issue
      5. popcorn as radiation tester

So I've checked snopes.com, what now? You can't have used those little items to form your opinion.

You say "this story is shot down every time it pops up". You mean the story of Fukushima? No, you can't mean that...... Fukushima's been dubunked!!! That would be the stupidest thing ever said!

So, it must be some smaller portion of the diary which offends you, but which part?

Nah, on second thought, you're probably talking about Fukushima generally.

      •  And what's with the HR on my Tip Jar, man? (10+ / 0-)

        Why did Zek do that?

Why an I asking you? Anyway, thanks for standing up for the story.

The only thing you found at Snopes remotely in common with the reporting referenced in my OP is "2. specific reporting of recent steam issue". That "specific reporting" was of Russian claims that the steam in question is generated by underground explosions at Fukushima. That has nothing to do with my diary which relies upon mainstream media reports of steam releases over a 6 month period, which everybody seems to agree take place, but for which no one has proven a cause. The OP also relies on MSM reporting of TEPCO's disclosure of beta emitting isotopes in groundwater beneath building No. 4. The OP makes no claims of explosive effects from continued fusion at Fukushima.

According to the actual news seeping out of the TEPCO/Japanese/widespread media blackout about what is happening at Fukushima, occurrences observed and reported are consistent with the OP's premise that a big unresolved problem at Fukushima is "a fission reaction, in this case, an uncontrolled reaction at an unknown place under poorly understood conditions." These are the " the blob(s) of feral corium TEPCO has set loose on Japan's Pacific coast."

SNOPES has not debunked this point, or even examined it. No resort to conspiracy theory required when observed facts are judged by the laws of physics. TEPCO doesn't know where the Reactor no. 3 core presently is located, its condition, or its level of activity. They can't make direct observations or measurements. They rely upon the steadiness and/or long term reduction of environmental remote locations around the ruined reactor to conclude that fission is suspended. However, that hypothesis cannot explain all the evidence, such as the persistence of the steam releases and the movement of beta emitting isotopes in groundwater.

These are matters suitable and worthy for discussion in a community like Daily Kos. Throwing down the gauntlet of CT with an off hand and off target reference to Snopes and an HR on the Tip Jar does nothing to foster either suitable or worthy discussion on the merits.

        •  This is what I'm talking about. (6+ / 0-)

One reader sent me a private email containing this link to a site that conjectures that the radioactive decay of the reactor No. 3 corium may alone account for 1 megawatt of energy, more than enough to generate lots of steam, which, of course, is more visible in the winter cold. This theory requires no uncontrolled fusion to explain away the steam. The point it makes is valid. However, it fails to deal with beta emitting isotopes that keep turning up and require ongoing fission to create in sustained levels. But, it does paint a grim enough picture, of " radioactive rubble [that] is constantly releasing moisture (steam) and radioactive products into the environment." Swell, Thanks for the good news.

Really. Thanks. let's talk about the facts and the policy and the mistakes, a suitable and worthy discussion is good.

Conspiracy theories. They cause actual harm to people and to real issues, such as disaster relief and man-made environmental damage.

For your total ignorance and fear-mongering, you will always get an HR. This diary is no better than the Daily Caller. And, in many ways, actually worse.

          •  I HR bogus accusations against diarists (0+ / 0-)

And lies from people who shout "sit down and shut up" in a burning theater. Your lies can cause real harm.

            •  Except there is no burning theater (0+ / 0-)

There's just the clattering of tinfoil hats being knocked off hard heads.

Need I go on? Because there IS a serious risk with Fukushima, but scaremongering, fearmongering, blatant lying, and conspiracy theorizing is making it HARDER to protect the environment. Not easier. Lies are NEVER preferable to the truth.

So, please, go sit down and shut up while grown folks deal with the situation. Because you are obviously incapable of even comprehending this situation, let alone contributing anything remotely meaningful.
