  •  Thank you, Dave. (17+ / 0-)

I pretty much feel the same way. My efforts NOT to be gay came about because of my Southern Baptist upbringing as well as the heteronormativity that you mention.

in every diary like the one that prompted this from now on. Reform Jewish, so not as onerous, but not that different.

      •  Having been raised quite casually Jewish (10+ / 0-)

When I was in my late teens and early twenties, struggling to come to terms with my sexuality, I had no great insights as to how Reform Judaism viewed such things. I tended to grab the less generous interpretations of the most problematic passages in Leviticus and go from there until I reached the point when I realized they simply didn't serve me. My upbringing generally caused me to be perhaps extraordinarily circumspect when it came to matters of sexuality; if I had to ascribe that to anything I would ascribe it to my father's great reticence in discussing the matter. And that, in turn, came from the fact that even though he rejected much of his Orthodox upbringing, he retained a good deal of the mindset.

I suppose we can count ourselves lucky that we at least didn't get the the fire and brimstone version of religious condemnation and that the Reform movement began to follow the path laid out by the Reconstructionist movement, which was the first branch of Judaism to embrace our equality and advocate for our acceptance.

      choose heterosexuality.

Bigots and homophobes don't mind "choice" as long as you "choose" the "choice" they approve of.

Homophobes truly do have a complete indoctrination system in place to demand heterosexuality.  And the saddest of all is that people of otherwise goodwill are willing to abide by these demanding homophobes.

Talk about "cramming it down our throats".  Every waking moment, in church, in school, in politics, in the military, in bakeries, in photography studios, in florist businesses, in employment, in marriage, in housing.  You name it, the homophobes have their fingers in all of it.

Discussing gay marriages in UT that said something to the effect of curing straights of their heterosexuality.
Is there a cure for straights?
        I thought it was funny.
As if gays 'choose' to be ostrated (sp) from society, risk getting kicked out of their families, lose friends, risk getting fired, beat up, ect.
Sure many gays can 'try' to be straight.
Many do. They get married, have kids, but some never feel 'normal'.
Gawd knows I tried for over 30 yrs not to be gay. It wasn't the life I wanted. I 'wanted' to get married and have kids and be 'normal'.
But when SHE walked in to my life, I finally accepted the fact that I was gay. I remember going for a long walk talking to Gawd, (ex Catholic) and thought if I was really made in His image, then how could loving another woman be a sin.
I answered for Him. It wasn't.
I finally came out to myself and never looked back.
        Choice?  Hell no!
        Born gay.
        Others are born straight.
        Not a choice.
        Nice diary, Dave.
