by the media, including the National Enquirer, there were all kinds of calls on this site that the charges were ridiculous and that a rag like the Enquirer should never be quoted here.  As we found out, the John Edwards story was more than true and he paid the price because people here felt betrayed by his behavior.

The reason that these Republicans do not pay the price for these same types of disclosures is that Republicans live in a world dominated by white male privilege.  That culture of white male privilege gives a wink and a nod to all sorts of extracurricular activity, and it all goes away.  The same applies to these big time college football players who rape women, an "investigation" ensues, and then it all goes away because a big bowl game or a Heisman Trophy hangs in the balance, and really, what is more important, a big game and football career, or some minor pesky rape charge.

The connection with religion comes because those religions that are the most hypocritically concerned with "family values" are those most controlled and dominated by the culture of male white privilege.  Catholicism, all of the Southern evangelical Protestant religions, the ultra Orthodox Jewish tradition, and certain Muslim traditions come to mind immediately.  Yet you rarely hear these abusive behaviors within the context of the Episcopalians, Quakers, Unitarians, and other more liberal Protestant traditions where women are accorded full participation within the church organization and hold major decision-making positions within the church hierarchy.

The only deviation from these "family values" that is not permitted within the Republican/conservative mindset is when "teh gay" is involved.  Look at how fast Larry Craig was dropped.  Look at how fast Ted Haggard became a non-entity within his religious platform.  "Teh gay" is the one unforgivable sin in that world.
