I think you just won the thread.

Patriotism is the FIRST refuge of the scoundrel.

    •  Okay, I grant that this is true (0+ / 0-)

However, you're forgetting the televangelist scandals of the 1980's, where two men who had a lot of political and economic clout (Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Bakker) were indeed run out of their churches after being caught with their pants down (literally).  And wasn't Randy Cunningham another ostentatious religious type who merrily ripped off the public before he went to jail?  And Bernie Madoff, an Orthodox Jew who's now pretty much ostracized by any and everyone?

It's nowhere near as cut and dried as you're making it out to be.

I was speaking about politicians but yes it's sometimes true that some religious groups run their leaders off sometimes. Someone like Madoff that actually goes to jail can be ostracized by most everyone, sure.

Swaggart and Bakker are still preaching today. They don't hold as much political power as they did in their prime but they're still players in their religious groups. Your examples mostly backup my point even more. I probably don't have to mention the Catholic church and the protection the church provided for their clergy...

I still maintain that religion is a problem in politics and there have been no examples presented of secular hypocrisy which is the topic you presented that got us going down this path. Not that I don't think there aren't any examples of secular politicians going astray of their secular beliefs, but I can't think of any offhand and it would be a huge exception to the rule if we could come up with one... unlike they myriad examples of failed "family values" religious politicians.

        •  I don't dispute your essential point (0+ / 0-)

However, please don't forget that a lot of progressive work in this country has explicitly occurred BECAUSE of religious convictions.

When should I expect my check from Markos?  Or do the checks still come directly from George Soros?
