  •  If they void the marriages, all hell breaks loose (0+ / 0-)

Just imagine the State of Utah hit with a 1800-person strong class action lawsuit.

They're already spending $2 million to have competent outside legal counsel handle this current case for them.  Think of how much more they'll be on the hook for if they open themselves up to a class action suit.

    •  On what basis would there be a suit?? (1+ / 0-)

It doesn't take much to litigate a case that is absolutely baseless, so I suspect that no one in Utah is going to be afraid of the threat of litigation.

With luck, this will all be a moot point.

      •  And it would be baseless how? n/t (0+ / 0-)

        •  You're the one suggesting a lawsuit (1+ / 0-)

Not to be coy, but if you think that they could bring a lawsuit, I'm asking on what theory.  I think it would be baseless because there isn't any legal basis to claim that the state has to recognize one's marriage when the courts have determined that there was no valid support for the marriage in the first place.

Again, hopefully it's a moot point.

the purpose of a stay is to stop just that sort of shitstorm from a six-month change in the law.

If Hobby Lobby is against contraception, why does it buy its inventory from China, the country that limits the number of children by law?
