  •  Nothing half so much (6+ / 0-)

    worth doing

"Nice? It's the only thing," said the Water Rat solemnly as he leant forward for his stroke. "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing—absolute nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing," he went on dreamily: "messing—about—in—boats; messing—"
Lovely canoe. I live too far from real moving water these days, and miss it.

I forgot about that passage from The Wind In The Willows.

for a long time. Even after I'd given up the idea of building my own, recognizing that it would take me a lifetime to acquire the boatbuilding skills for what I wanted to do.

Where do you do your paddling? That picture looks as if it could be in New England.

Near Chicago.  We were living in a Northern suburb then before moving up to NW Michigan.

Yes, the lushness there does look like New England.

But now my usual paddles except in the big lake (Michigan) are on the wonderful swift and twisting sand bottomed rivers in Michigan.

And, for the longest time, I did not think that I had the skills to craft the final product, but with a couple of friends who have built boats giving me encouragement and hints, I found that taking things a step at a time let me get the job done.  And while I can see some of my mistakes, others rarely notice.

The sea kayak will be my fifth boat.

      now and then.

Irene in 2011 and then Sandy both flooded our garage to 4 feet off the ground.

Yeah, we're built up higher so they just failed to take out the main house. Third time, who knows.....
