I am in favor of having just such a float as long as it is followed by the ever-popular "Lions eating Christians" themed float.  Building a monument to hate speech out of organic materials is just so tres' chic, and dulls down the message ever so slightly don't you think?

Or was this just an American interpretation of Monty Python spouting off completely ironic monstrosities, and acting smug and righteous, all while pretending it's humor?

I don't think those of us on the secular left want to hurt Christians.  We just don't want their beliefs to trump our rights. And we don't want public policy, particularly on environmental issues and civil rights, to be driven by one specific interpretation of Christianity.

I think what really sets the evangelicals off is that they confuse being told they can't participate in the political process, with losing a political battle. They are unable to recognize the legitimacy of any other point of view.  On issues of morality, we all have the right to contest their position. On issues of science that related to public policy, we have the right to tell them beliefs don't trump facts, and that they need to STFU.
