In the 1970s there was a very serious proposal to move the state capital from Juneau to a site north of Anchorage near Willow, AK--actually not far from Wasilla. For some reason, there was a widely-held view in south central Alaska, where a majority of the state's population lives, that people should actually be ably to drive to their state capital.

In the end, the proposal died because of costs.

Much of the administrative affairs of the various departments of government have moved to Anchorage. The governor's mansion and the legislature are still in far.
