  •  Bill Young never held a town hall meeting (9+ / 0-)

Like many politicians, Bill Young came across quite amiably in person.

However, I've been in his district for almost 20 years, and he never held a single group constituent meeting.  A couple of years ago, his office distributed a mail-in "town hall" form.  What the...?  I called up and asked why they wouldn't have a real one and was told that they were afraid of disruptions.   Given that representatives around the country handle these meetings fine, so what was Young really afraid of?

Because he wasn't really "very representative of his district." It's a well-known balanced swing district, and a district that twice went with Obama.   Yet despite his landslide wins and accumulated political capital, Young always voted against Obama and lockstep with Republican craziness.

Unless you mean by representing his district he brought home the pork, yes, that's what kept him in office for so long and bought off the media editors.  The recurring theme of the Times' endorsement of him against challengers was that Young didn't always represent reasonable balanced views of his district but at least he had clout in Washington.

The term "carpetbagger" as a single-label derogatory term is about 120 years out of date, especially in a state like Florida where most people are from somewhere else. Rick Scott moved to Florida only 7 years before running for governor, and Jeb Bush moved to Florida just 14 years before first running for office.  I'm a native of this area, and I'd glad vote for a carpetbagger who is very experienced and willing to represent the diverse views of her district over a homegrown light-weight candidate who doesn't seem to have the capacity to know where she stands on the issues.

Especially when he told the unemployed guy to "get a job".

Yeah, real class act.  And I've lived here for 17 years, in the district just north of Young's, and NEVER HEARD A WORD OF THIS CRAP.

And I keep up with the local news/opinions regularly.
