  •  Worst President for the environment in my lifetime (4+ / 0-)

Yes, I'm talking about President Obama. Even Baby Bush has a better record. I look back with nostalgia at the Nixon era, the man who signed the Endangered Species act, the Clean Air act, and created the EPA.

O.K., he vetoed the Clean Water act, but he generally supported it.

How can it be that, looking back, that far-Right extremist criminal President suddenly looks like a Leftist environmentalist? How could we have swung so far to the Right? How can a Democratic President be so far right of Nixon?

and the regulation of mercury on power plants? regulating new coal plants out of existence? not to mention huge green investment by DOE and Interior in Solar and wind projects....big weatherizing homes investment, i could go on and on, new TV standards were just announced a couple weeks ago.

Obama's budget proposal called for less than a billion in "green" energy subsidies. "W" spent over 30 billion during his terms.

There's still a lot of coal plants for having been "regulated out of existence". Sure, there are no new ones currently planned, because natural gas is cheaper. Time will tell if this actually has a major positive effect.

Weatherization has been going on for decades; I'm too tired to compare funding levels but this isn't some big breakthrough. CAFE standards are weak, and far in the future, but sure, helpful. The mercury is a big one, but has been a long time coming and I'm not sure Obama gets the credit on that one. In fact, if anything, Nixon's EPA deserves it.

I'm sticking to my statement. Particularly in the light of the extreme urgency of our climate crisis, about which Obama has talked, but done nothing - unless you count opening up new sources of oil and coal as quickly as possible, which negates any positive action he has taken for the environment...

    •  Yes, right off the bat he fast-tracked 42 out of (0+ / 0-)

48 MTR coal mining permits (e.g., they were approved by March 2009, weeks after he came into office).

To the present day, when he's doing things like teaching the Chinese to frack (I've supplied the link(s) before, I can do so again if anyone has trouble googling the information).

And also approving a pipeline TO the tarsands (to send diluent up there) - for the life of me I don't know why that gets a pass while people are screaming bloody murder about KXL all the time on this site.   Maybe because it clouds prospects for moving tar sands bitumen by rail?  Who knows, guess we'll just have to wait a few more decades to see how all this 11-D maneuvering plays out.
