  •  What gets me is this (32+ / 0-)

Gates is upset that a couple of Democratic politicians had political calculations regarding a military policy that was not very popular with the public.

Oh the horror!  Politicians are political!

And, as if no Republican has every had a jaded political view on a subject.  Or military subject (Syria BS, my friends?  "We should do something!" "Oh, the President wants to do something?  We'd better be consulted!").

Yes, Bill Gates lost a lot of respect in my eyes..."ingrate" hardly covers it.

    •  and Bush was all about Afghanistan (19+ / 0-)

his laser-like focus on AQ and the Taliban made it a sure thing that we'd win hearts and minds, solve the millenium-old feuds, and exit cleanly in record time. Bonus, we found out there was no connection between AQ and Iraq, thus saving ourselves a real military drag on the nation, thousands of needless casualties, and a stable price of oil.

Yeah, that's what happened all right.

For anyone, ANYONE, to cry that Obama was a negligent C-in-C regarding Afghanistan is ludicrous, but coming from Gates it is offensive on so many levels.
Oh, and i wonder why the president might have been a little preoccupied with his domestic agenda. Was there something pressing going on in the country? I don't recall anything. Besides, working with such a helpful congress should have made all that a piece of cake.

That shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who follows politics.

It's surprising there are some Dems who keep expecting otherwise.  Take a clue from the modern GOP - dance with the suitor who brought you.  Stop hating your own party or join the other one.

If cutting Social Security & Medicare benefits for low income seniors is what Democrats do after they win a budget standoff, I'd hate to see what they do after they lose one.

and frankly, terrible, especially to the extent he admitted to withholding counsel from Obama but yet lashing himself to Obama's actual policies.

I'm sorry, I agree with Gates that Congress is petty, that the military deserves respect, and all of that stuff, but he is just contemptuous to the idea of civilian leadership.  Obviously, there's a need to rebuild Pentagon staff morale after Rumsfeld, but to hear Gates' account, the military and CIA should be autonomous and Congress should defer not to voters but self-described beltway wise men.  Gates' qualification for membership was lying to Congress in Iran Contra and telling Reagan that Gorbachev will be a hardliner just you wait.

Based on this, yes, Obama should have let Gates walk, but how is it Obama's fault if Gates explicitly acted like a hypocrite?  I don't even see how Obama didn't get exactly what he wanted out of Gates in terms of war policy -- is the best Gates can do that he (Gates) thought Obama was wavering on policy based on getting mad at a leak at a meeting, or that Obama "rushed" a policy Gates actually previously agreed with in DADT repeal?

It can't be news that smart, talented people in the upper echelons of the Pentagon and at the NSC don't always agree.  It's the same stuff in Game Change II re Gibbs and Valerie Jarrett.  Who cares?  If everyone agreed all the time it'd be worse, but Gates believes in only sharing his thoughts when he can make money off it.

      Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.

McCain and Graham shed crocodile tears and tut-tut in front of the media's cameras and microphones, pretending they have a firm grip on "foreign policy" while all they're really doing is desperately turning the back-seat driving, let's-pretend-we're-relevant kiddie steering wheel.

Apparently the news media and the public are supposed to ignore the fact that both of these insufferable and self-aggrandizing camera-mugging assholes fervently supported the lie-based Iraq war that helped create the very Al-Queda in Iraq that McCain is wringing his hands about.

Shameless Republicans.  But I repeat myself.
