    It's kinda like sponsoring a bill then voting against it.

      Since you have withdrawn your support of William Thomas for the Federal District judgship in the southern district of Florida, I will ask you to submit the name of a potential appointee to my office within 1 week.  If this appointee is deemed acceptable, we will put the nomination forward.  If not, the White House will nominate its own candidate.

      Unfortunately, we have been left with no choice in this judicial emergency.  Your withdrawal of support for your own candidate makes the identification and approval of a new judge in this district a matter of the greatest urgency.

        The least that could be done is for someone with more authority to sit down with Patrick Leahy and convince him that this is one of those "greatest urgency" moments.  
        I guess this is our cue to contact the man.
