  •  More tax cuts for wealthy corporations (18+ / 0-)

in name of fighting poverty. Meh.

    What we need are:

1.WPA style jobs program for everyone who is unemployed.
2.Living wage as the minimum wage. $15 per hour.
    3. Rent controls and rents subsidies for housing.
    4.Massive expansion of Pell Grants.

...died in January 2011 (not that it was on the agenda in the first place) when the House changed hands.

Rent control is a local issue. Rent subsidies already exist under "Section 8" of the Housing Act of 1937 (but they only go to slightly under 4 million families currently).

Even though none of these are passable given the current Congress, our leaders should talk about such matters every time they discuss "the economy." The only way to gain the political clout to accomplish such things is to elect leaders who will push them through. And the only way voters will energized to vote for such leaders is if programs—like WPA, expanded Pell Grants, infrastructure banks, etc.—are publicly discussed at every opportunity.

Don't tell me what you believe, show me what you do and I will tell you what you believe.

I agree with you on much of this, but I am extremely skeptical whenever tax advantages are offered for businesses in order to address poverty.

I'd rather see politicians pushing for truly progressive policy. Tax cuts have done tremendous harm, and I don't believe that favorable treatment in "promise zones" will do any good at all.

we should just make all public colleges and universities free of charge. It'd be cheaper and more effective.
