...past have said gay people only need to pray the gay away and exercise more self control.  How is your diagnosis really any different.

pray the fat away?  Gaining too much weight is a complicated issue. From my own experience, it is common sense for me to get control of what I eat in order to lose my weight or to keep off the weight. Understanding what foods will help me feel and perform better and sticking to those foods, again, seems like common sense.  I can't say whether Christie was born to weigh 400 pounds or not.  If I felt that I was born to be obese maybe I wouldn't want to change the way I eat.  But I feel much better, more able to physically handle the tasks I need to, when I keep my weight under a number that is right for me.
IMO, my desire to eat might be as primal as who I want to have sex with, but my desire to eat doritos isn't.  Your mileage may vary.

That's the biggest difference.  Gays can't help being gay.  Many of them would stop being gay if they could, although I don't think they should have to.

And, by the way, we've mocked gays from the other party quite a few times, especially when they were hypocrites.  Remember Senator "Wide Stance."  We had a blast with that.

My point was that Christie's weight is completely irrelevant to his current problems.  Those problems are related to his character flaws, not his physique.

The past 50 years we: -Ended Jim Crow. -Enacted the Voting Rights Act. -Attained reproductive rights (contraceptive & abortion). -Moved toward pay equity. Republicans want to take our country back. I WON'T GO BACK!

we never mention the weight of people we like. Just as a test a year or two ago after Rush Limbaugh lost 100 lbs I looked at the last 25 diaries, and the comments in them, written about Limbaugh and the last 25 about Michael Moore. Every Limbaugh diary mentioned that he was fat and the comments mentioned it numerous times. NONE of the Moore diaries mentioned that Moore was fat and none of the comments did either, even though at that point Moore was much heavier than the slimmed down Limbaugh. So as someone who has had weight issues for the last thirty years it's clear that weight is something writers at DKOS highlight selectively as a pejorative. It's wrong and should not be tolerated here. Weight should be off limits just like gender, race, religion, and sexual preference.

        "let's talk about that"

        •  Yes, it is used selectively as a (0+ / 0-)

          pejorative on a political site.

I think you'll also find that we selectively use the word stupid to describe many Republicans that we don't like.  For instance, I wish I had a nickel for every time we used that word to describe George W. Bush, even though he had degrees from Harvard and Yale.  And there are many very fine people in this country with average or below average intelligence that don't deserve to be lumped together with Bush.

I think this argument is becoming rarified and strange.  The picture I posted of Krispy Kreme donuts could have been posted any weeknight on Leno or Letterman.  I didn't catch their shows Thursday night, but I suspect there were a lot of fat jokes.  The rest of the world considers fat jokes in-bounds.  On DailyKos, we have created our own echo chamber in which there are enough people to become outraged over it because it reminds us of gay and racial slurs, neither  of which it can be properly compared to without a great deal of unnatural stretching.

And I think it makes us look bad when we can't crack a few jokes that are acceptable in our culture anywhere else, especially when they are applied to a miserable turd like Chris Christie.
