  •  Don't blame Spokane -- they're a pretty blue town (6+ / 0-)

but the 5th has a LARGE area. From Wikipedia's description of it

Washington's 5th congressional district encompasses the Eastern Washington counties of Ferry, Stevens, Pend Oreille, Lincoln, Spokane, Whitman, Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield, and Asotin. It is centered around Spokane, the state's second largest city.
I suffer from that effect in the 8th district with Dave "I'm the Sheriff!" Reichert. We get some city voters but the mostly rural parts of King and Pierce that dominate the district keep electing that misogynistic bigoted clown back into office.

There are lies, damn lies, and statistics but they all pale in comparison to conservative talking points.

    •  Resources (7+ / 0-)

Party resources to Eastern Washington have dried up over the last decade or so. Over twenty legislative seats went uncontested in 2012 (and 2013), mostly in Eastern Washington. Party building activities are few and far between.

On the bright side, the last few candidates running in Eastern Washington announced relatively late in the cycle, so I am optimistic that Joe can build a formative bank account to make it a competitive race.

    •  Reichert is in a district we probably need (3+ / 0-)

for a majority.  It's only R+1 (as opposed to R+7 in WA-05).  He routinely outperforms the R presidential candidate. The district has gone for Obama twice, and went for Kerry (albeit before a slight reddening in redistricting).  Reichert should never get less than our best race, however, which is why it is disappointing that we don't have a strong DCCC candidate identified yet.

      •  Yep, I can't understand why we don't have (0+ / 0-)

someone who will give him "a run for the money".
