    I think it is perfectly appropriate to insist that full-time employees not work more than X hours per day, or X days per N-day period.

    Many European countries take these sorts of labor restrictions for granted. (Something else you don't see in Europe: Employees "losing" vacation days, because they "don't have time" to take them. It's generally illegal not to take your vacation days.)

    To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.

      ...make a lot of sense for labor.  From a labor perspective, I don't see much downside to a restriction that says you can't lose vacation days.  On the other hand, here, there is a downside to labor:  this law prevents a worker from working a schedule that a lot of workers would prefer to 5 on, 2 off or 6 on, 1 off, which are permissible.
