  •  Google and Yahoo are special places and not the (7+ / 0-)

ordinary coder location.  I'm a programmer for an international company.  We have been told point blank - you are interchangeable parts.  We will out source/off shore your jobs should it help the bottom line.

This happened in late October or early November.  There's one team that was told half the workers (programmers) will be laid off in the next 6 months.  They will have to 'train' their 'replacements' (an Indian company that hot seats it's workers).  Not only that, but because of a 'project' they are also 'required' to work at least 5 hours overtime a week.  They are upstream to me.  I expect absolutely nothing from them on anything at this point.  And all this was after it was made known that they didn't have enough bodies to do the work that was already assigned them.

    •  I have never been a fan of globalization (12+ / 0-)

The hippie in me loves the idea of lifting all boats, all over the world, but the people losing what they had will be hurt.  Even though I am long past working age, I help show people what has happened.  I urge them to vote for a leash on the big money.  I remind them of the Rockefellers and Carnegies of the world and what it took to reel them in the last time we were in this position....just about 100 years ago.

There is a change coming.  Talk with people.  They all know it's all wrong now, but far too many don't know why.  It's not hard to explain it to them.  When they say "the government steals my money", I immediately counter with "No, Time Warner Cable steals your money.  Your insurance company steals your money.  The water company steals your money.  Exxon-Mobil steals your money.  AT&T steals your money.   And what do all of those companies have in common?  CEOs with 7 houses and lots of stock options.  What do you get?  Shitty service and a price hike every year."

It makes them stop and think.  And that is the first step.  I have a lot of varied friends on facebook....from all walks of life....old-school conservatives, teabaggers, Buddhists, hippies, "I-don't-give-a-shits".....more and more people make fun of Fox "News" now than ever before.  I know it's not a scientific gauge, but it is in my world and the change is palpable.

We need to keep on keepin' on and make the change we want to see.  Throwing up our hands and saying "ALEC did it!" doesn't change anything.  Handing all of your friends and neighbors the stories about ALEC makes a difference.

Listening to the NRA on school safety is like listening to the tobacco companies on cigarette safety. (h/t nightsweat)

I have been saying the exact same thing and yes, it does get some people to at least start questioning their worldview.

"No, Time Warner Cable steals your money.  Your insurance company steals your money.  The water company steals your money.  Exxon-Mobil steals your money.  AT&T steals your money.   And what do all of those companies have in common?  CEOs with 7 houses and lots of stock options.  What do you get?  Shitty service and a price hike every year."
And damn don't you know these chuckleheads will raise the cost of their service over and over again. It's like a never ending feedback loop.
Government may not be perfect, but I do not get the sense they are trying to rip me off.
