  •  ...soap will slowly coat the pipe... (6+ / 0-)

...if pipes aren't laid properly. I have the same problem.due to a pipe that was not laid in the ground with a drop of one inch per foot...I have my own little rooter router thing (worth it compared to renting one four or five times per year). I also use a bottle of enzymes and let it sit for 24 hours...

    •  Once a week or so, I dump the coffee grounds down (4+ / 0-)

the sink and follow them with scalding hot water.  Let it run for a minute or two, and that tends to keep them flowing cleanly.

The smartest thing is "watch what you put in the sink!"
Scraper the plates and things into the garbage before putting them in the sink.  Rinse with the hottest water you can stand.

Marry a plumber.  Oh.  sorry, kids. :-)

enzymes? I know nothing about enzymes. Is it just one thing that everyone will just understand? How big a bottle? Can it hurt the chrome ring in the sink? I'm desperate, pNut.

      •  ...sorry, I'd left for the night when you asked... (0+ / 0-)

...in Paradise everyone is on septic. It's the largest town in all of California exclusively on septic systems.

The local Ace Hardware store carries a whole array of bacteria and enzymes to keep your septic system going.

One of these products is specifically for cleaning out the main drain pipes of soap, grease and paper. You pour it into your drains or toiled (flush it down) and let it do it's thing without flushing again if possible for 24 hours or more.

        This stuff really works...

...drains. We never flush any toilet paper down either (that will eventually kill a septic system due to cellulose not being fully digested by the bacteria.

Soap is going to go down the drain. When using the dishwasher, it is important to NOT use the granular type in septic systems. We use liquid types.

Also, you can't use any clorox or especially Pinesol down the drains. You can't use any detergent with phosphates.

If you do these things, your septic system will work great. And the leach field won't crap out for 30+ years...
