American's use the word "Liberalism" differently than the rest of the world. Americans think of hippies and feminists while everyone else thinks of bankers.

took his cue from thinkers such as Locke and Spinoza, but arrived at quite a different conclusion: the greater good for all. I think it's important to note that progressive ideology progresses, and not let ourselves be bound by ancient ideologies that were progressive in their time. In that sense, I think the Americans actually have it right: the free-market preachings of Adam Smith, which are the foundation of today's "Liberal" world economics, are quite conservative in today's context, and furthermore these ideologies have exhaustively demonstrated that they are the antithesis of the Liberalism that is supposed to bring about equality and human rights.  What exactly would you call these "hippie" ideologies: environmentalism, social welfare, civil rights, feminism, egalitarianism, etc?
