  •  Yes, absolutely. People who don't vote the (4+ / 0-)

way you do should die. Way to show that we're the party of empathy! That's just such a disturbing, heartless comment.

    •  Cause and effect (4+ / 0-)

Diana is just pointing out cause and effect, has nothing to do with empathy.

You can point out to someone dying of lung cancer that "maybe your smoking for 50 years has something to do with it", but that is pointing out cause and effect that they probably are well aware of.  Just as "heartless", but just as correct.

Pointing out the effects of climate change to someone whose house has been flattened by an "extreme weather event" is also "heartless", but that's a cause and effect connection that not a whole lot of people are making.

Conservatives always campaign on emotion, stoking fear and goading greed in their voters.  They seek to sweep cause and effect under the rug, because they know that rational self-interest will not get them votes.   What's better for them, heartless facts that might wake them up, or the soft acquiescence of empathy?

People who don't vote the way Diana does shouldn't die, but how to point out to them that they are building their own gallows?

and say you lost your job because of Obama.  Because he hates coal and guns and wants to take away your healthcare and raise your taxes.  We need a little nuance on how this political messaging works.  Who do you vote for when nobody represents you on the issues like the environment?

    •  Everyone, stop this (4+ / 0-)

Embroidering negative, insulting assumptions onto what people say is a bad habit on this site and disturbingly common in diaries about the WV chemical spill.

Diana only said that this is what comes of voting for an anti-regulatory agenda. She was a bit blunt, but there's no indication in her comment that she wants people to suffer.

The crisis is the result of anti-regulatory sentiment among both politicians and voters. But, anyone who points that out accused of being a heartless monster.

Ignoring the reality of voter sentiment ensures that more and worse crises will arise, and it's anything but kind.
