  •  Sometimes you have to yell at hospital staff (6+ / 0-)

I am saddened to learn about your husband and your cat. I hope his surgery is successful. Yell if you need to, sometimes it is the only thing that works.

Once when my husband had surgery he needed catheterization to empty his bladder and the nurses on the floor didn't want to bother a doctor to get it authorized because it was Sunday afternoon. I had to pitch a screaming fit at the nurses' station to get them to call someone.

    •  they called me "the pushy daughter" (7+ / 0-)

because I was always asking questions and making sure my mom had what she needed

a loving person to act as patient advocate is essential to healing.  no one in that hospital cares as much about The Packhorse as irishwitch does!

      •  And she is the expert is HIS body. (9+ / 0-)

That was what I always told the medical people about Dan:
They were the experts in medicine, and I was the expert in HIS body.

        ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((TBM))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Excellent that you were "the pushy daughter" !
I got that when I had to pull the doc and a nurse out of my mom's room because they were trying to convince her, while she was under sedation but semi-conscious, to do something that she had, in my presence, told them they could not do unless she was completely out. They got my complete lecture on consent and bullying.

When Dan was in the hospital so many times for four years, I also got deemed "the pushy wife", because I explained to them the various ways they were trying to, or had almost killed him.

                                   Sigh !
                          Praise to the pushy !

        •  Praise to the pushy!!! (7+ / 0-)

they tried to put a tube down my mom's nose while she had a "do not intubate" order and even though she was barely conscious she fought against them, turning her head this way and that and making grunting sounds, until they called me and asked me what they should do.

whereupon I responded that she had a DNI and they should respect it.

They made me come to the hospital and sign another one.

people who have advocates do better than those who don't!

Praise to irishwitch for being there for her husband!!!

Rolling my eyes that they made you come and sign another one, like the first one didn't count. Sigh ! I'm so sorry you and she were put through all that :(

Yup, I always tell people who are entering or in the hospital that they should have someone who can advocate on their behalf, for so many important reasons.

Praise to irishwitch for being pushy on behalf of her husband !
