Changing attitudes about guns is imperative. When I read GunFail, its painfully obvious that there is a serious lack of accountability for "tragedies" and "accidents". If you're cleaning a gun and you accidentally kill your 3 year old sitting in a high chair, thats far more than just an accident. Its reckless, its needless endangerment, its involuntary homicide. Same goes if you're in the queue to pay at Walmart, you reach for your wallet and accidentally pull the trigger on your gun, shooting the person behind you in line in the leg. Yes, its an accident, but a needless one; one born out of a lack of training or careless carrying.

In some ways, I think there are some corollaries to the scourge of drunk driving. Someone has a few drinks, gets in a car, and kills someone, its an accident, but its also more than that. It was irresponsible and reckless. Because of MADD, we were able to make significant progress in lowering the incidences of drunk driving.

The culture needs to change with respect to gun ownership. With rights come responsibilities. With responsbilities come accountability. If you do something reckless and careless with a gun, you should be held criminally responsible and accountable. If we as a society were more aggressive about this, I think more people would think twice before even buying or carrying a gun.
