    ... for your mother, to have had that happen with kids in the house.  What is wrong with people?  Is what's right with them the shorter list?

      My dad was in law enforcement, and our neighbor across the street was NYPD. I think they just figured the suburbs really wasn't so safe you could just leave your doors open.

      I do remember seeing the cops in the house talking to my parents and looking at the back door entrance (which my parents tended to leave unlocked).

      I was pretty young then, like maybe five or six.  My baby sister was really small, so that's why I think I was around that age.  I remember telling my friends at school about all the excitement (as seen thru kid eyes!)

      I hate to say this, but it definitely didn't change any habits! Instead of leaving the door unlocked, we had a key placed in a coat hanging in the tiny mud room porch to get in thru the back door!

      Back then, things were different at least.  Nowadays, people don't just steal, but can do worst things, too.  :-(
