but so sad this happened to you. I've been burgled once, a long time ago. It's a feeling of violation, for sure. Glad you were not in the house at the time, too. The perp/s were very daring to think they could enter an open house knowing people were most likely at home. It does seem like a crime of opportunity. I occasionally leave my back door open when I'm in front shoveling or mowing. Never again ....

In my prior life I knew a fair number of cops and they all told me one of the best crime deterrents is a dog. The pros know they make a racket and just aren't worth the hassle.

My miniature poodle, Sully, is probably more fierce than any of the standard poodles I have known, but My Big Guy Mike looked the part -
    Majestic Mike

In real life Mike never growled or snarled or snapped at anything - but he wasn't submissive in the least. He just didn't see the point. Miss that guy ....

    Stay safe, e.

... and i wish you didn't have to relate to it through your own first hand experience.

Never again.  Yes.  PLEASE keep your space and your personal self as secure as possible.  As i said above, we don't want to feel as if we're walking targets for ne'er-do-wells.  But ...

I wonder if we should get a dog ...

I'd do in a heartbeat if I worked nearby!

          Get a dog.

I'm always thankful to be put on alert whenever Dusty begins barking seemingly randomly. I know he doesn't bark just for the hell of it so it means he heard something unusual outside. The great thing about Dusty is that he'll start barking if someone is making a lot of noise as they come up to the door; they don't have to be talking for him to hear them. However, he knows the sounds that I or my roommate make whenever we come home because he never starts barking when one of us walks up to the door.
