    Gold Rules.

And the big issue with "the whole NSA/spying/warrantless searches/extra-judicial killings/illegal detentions thing" for Obama was that what Bush did after 9/11 didn't work.

    -- Attacking the wrong country

-- FBI going off to dysfunctional craziness instead of building competent counterterrorism systems

-- That every single thing addressed in Obama's Cairo speech had been dropped in the toilet

Look on down the page for my post on Moussaoui/laptop and Flight 253. Stopping terrorists has had nothing to do with stealing emails or phone records.

Obama got the big stuff right. And yes, I'll argue that drone murders are preferable to seeing militias dominate whole societies, such as what happened to Lebanon in 1982-1985 (where conventional military efforts simply failed) and murders have run up to the tens of thousands.

Consider a world with many Hizb Allah consolidated-militia murder machines. I'll take drones hitting their armories and training operations and comm centers, any day. It's a choice between bads.

I agree with you about the drones. The only thing is that I think all weaponized drones should be transferred to the military. We also need to set clear geographical guidelines for their use.

The countries we recognize either have control of an area or they don't. If they have control of that area, and we suspect someone in that area of planning to attack us, then we should extradite them. If the country can't capture them and extradite them, then we can use drones or other lethal force (presuming we don't have any reasonable way to capture them ourselves).

This sets clear guidelines and eliminates a host of problems. And I think weaponized drones should be handled by the Marines, because that's consistent with their capabilities-based mission.

The current budget deal cooking in the House apparently had secret language that would "prevent" Obama from shifting the drones from the CIA to the military. This is kookie, and absolutely contrary to the interests of the U.S., both in terms of foreign policy and in terms of support for democracy. And, democracy is what this is all about.

And, not to put too fine a point on it, but the President is CINC of the armed forces. He also runs the executive branch. It is completely unacceptable for Congress to try to tie his hands on something like this. Obama made a mistake in not taking charge of Guantanamo and moving the detainees out of there the moment he took office. This is the result of that. They don't have any respect for him as the commander of our military forces.

I think he doesn't understand the Republicans. You have to stand on their toes until they apologize for it. It's just the way they are, and if you don't treat them that way, they will run roughshod over you.

      •  Nobody understand Republicans. (0+ / 0-)

That's not a logical, rational operation. Outside of the Bush family, anyway.

"Obama made a mistake in not taking charge of Guantanamo and moving the detainees out of there the moment he took office. This is the result of that. They don't have any respect for him as the commander of our military forces."

Oh, yeah. That 0.0001% of what is happening is suddenly so important.

Obama delegated Gitmo to Holder and Holder got sandbagged.

        BFD.
