as much information as he could. It's not that he became dismayed by what he learned on the job and struggled, finally deciding he had to do it. Frankly, we don't know whether his original intention in stealing the info was to make it public or not. That, and that he fled instead of going public and confronting the consequences here, makes me question the purity of his intentions.

Rep. Rogers' scenario is not credible without proof, but fleeing to China and accepting asylum from Putin are suspect in my mind.

I'm no fan of the hyper national security world we are in post-Patriot Act, that turns regular Americans going about their ordinary activities into suspects. Same as the war on drugs has, incidentally.

I want our individual privacy back. But I am at least as concerned about corporations being deeply into our business, trading in our private information, as our government having access to it with proper civil liberties protections. I hope we get there soon.

Okay, the Government says you MUST abort your child. NOW do you get it?

Haven't you read the comments on these diaries before?

Any questioning of Snowden's actions or motives means you want the US government to turn the NSA into the gestapo.

view insists that everything the US government does is wrong and everyone who exposes any classified US information is a hero, regardless of intent or consequences. I find that position shallow.

However, just to confuse people more, I welcome and applaud the national discussion we are finally having about privacy, security, civil liberties, secrecy vs transparency (a continuum, not black or white to my mind). Because I pelieve we are in a very scary hyper security state that we simply MUST walk back from or lose our American character.

    •  Wrong (0+ / 0-)

He went to his bosses with his concerns. They told him to STFU.
He had hoped Obama would roll back the Bush abuses since that is what he said he would do.
And facing the consequences?  Have you not been paying attention to the whistleblower diaries?
He would not be able to mount a decent defense under the espionage act.
And for the millionth time, his passport was suspended when he got to Russia.
That means he COULDN'T travel anywhere.
      Get the facts straight.
