I usually try to credit the sources I draw on when tagging - if I missed anyone this time around, it wasn't intentional. There's simply a vast amount of material relevant to the discussion here.

For further reading, the subject of what happens when the World is run like a business abound; it's an old story. Let me throw in a few "What If" tales from the future.

"The Space Merchants" by Pohl and Kornbluth is from 1952. Imagine an America where Congress is filled with elected representatives from corporations, the vast mass of people live in an over-populated, polluted world where the food and other products they buy are routinely spiked with low-level addictive drugs, and the 'hero' is an advertising man…

The Shockwave Rider by John Brunner is of a world barely holding together thanks to the net, levels of surveillance that would make the NSA jealous - and high SDO types all through it doing what they do, while the hero is something of an über Edward Snowden trying to find his way. Written in 1975, it's frighteningly prescient.

The Cold Cash War by Robert Asprin is a 1977 novel depicting what happens when corporations decide they no longer need the government - or their armies - to front for them.

Not fiction, unfortunately, is When Corporations Rule The World by David C. Korten. If you've been following the news about the TPP, you already have an idea about the kind of world they're trying to build.

"No special skill, no standard attitude, no technology, and no organization - no matter how valuable - can safely replace thought itself."
