unsupported teachers get depressed. Yelled-at teachers get angry. Disrespected teachers get cynical. And no matter how much they love teaching and how much they love their poor, disadvantaged, ignored-by-everyone-else students, they leave the field or phone it in just to keep their sanity.

This is based on my child's experience in rural Mississippi. So many times we talk about disadvantaged schools, or "failing" schools, and it's always those urban Chicago schools that spring to mind. The people in rural agricultural areas don't even show up in our stereotypes.

There is so much human potential wasted because we want to make life easier and better for people who are already well-off. If we took a tiny portion of the money we throw at "job creators" (who really don't) and put it toward, say, a heater that worked in a classroom, then this country would be back to greatness.

Roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair.

      Should have made that clear.

yes. thank you. you've hit the nail on the head, lisa. i loved teaching and loved my students but had to leave after a 3 years to restore my sanity. current education policy is damaging. and it's maddening. they won't let us teach.

i'm in the process of trying to sort out my thoughts and beliefs and approach to education so i can find a school that i am aligned with and make my way back into the profession.

i hate the fact that i, someone who actually loves and wants to work in this profession, am one of the statistics of teachers who leave before 5 years.
