    After all, limited franchise existed (and was considered a wise form of government) for almost twenty centuries, before becoming entirely extinct within the last hundred years or so.

    Are there any limited-franchise democracies left?  I can't think of any.  Mind you, they didn't fall apart because they were inherently unstable, or were destroyed by war.  They voluntarily (well, relatively) extended the franchise.

    Anyone with more Political Science/Theory experience want to illuminate us on the subject?

    (Technically, the franchise is still limited to actual citizens in most countries.)
