  •  ND? (0+ / 0-)

ND is the most highly rated in NY?

Maybe because NBC pushes it's ND games so much.  You can't watch NBC for 10 minutes during college football season without seeing an ad for NBC carrying ND football.

        •  ND is still the only "National" college program (0+ / 0-)

The only one.  Alabama is good, and wins every year.  Texas makes the most money.  Some of the others are attractive to watch on TV.  But, outside of their own markets and regional fan bases, everybody either hates them, or is indifferent.  Only Notre Dame has "real" fans in every market.  I know, my best friend when I was in college at Penn State, a Pennsylvania native, was a diehard ND fan.  His whole family was.  Not one of them ever went to ND, or even visited the place.

In truth, there are only three national teams in all of American sports:  Notre Dame, the NY Yankees, and the Dallas Cowboys.  I'm defining national teams as those that have fans, real, diehard, devoted fans, in quantity, in every market in the country.  The Cowboys and ND have been on hard times for a while (and the Yankees were down the entire 1980's), but, as soon as (and if) they ever get good again for a sustained period, their popularity will rocket off the charts.  Their fans seem to be hibernating, now, but start winning, and they just come out of the woodwork.

That is why ND is the only college team with it's own major network television contract.  It has very little to do with catholics.
