    the perfect whistleblower, we will be waiting quite some time. Sort of like waiting on the perfect president. Sometimes, you just have to go with what you got.

      That is why all the nitpicking over Snowden's actions gets a little old. I can stomach the debate over the big picture of course -- whether what he did is right or wrong, whether it will be effective or ineffective, although I think that the strongest case by far is that what he did was both right and effective, but we can debate these points -- it's part of the very public debate that he was hoping to spur, because the rightness of his actions depends too on whether or not it is right for the NSA to have such deep secrecy and extensive power to spy on us and the world.

      But as to whether or not Snowden measures up to some ideal of the perfect whistleblower, the whole, "I would have supported Snowden if he had only done X or believed Y" or whatever, that is really tiresome. He's here, he's reality, he's given us this information -- what are we going to do about it?
