  •  Did JW get indicted? (3+ / 0-)

I haven't paid this story too much attention, except to know that the governor and his wife were both indicted.

Did JW also get indicted?  for bribery?

I love the summary.  Good work!!

    •  I think JW sang like a canary (11+ / 0-)

otherwise they wouldn't have gotten this level of granular detail.  He's hoping to minimize charges against himself and his company.

Just a simple country farmer, off to the big city.....

Or so he'd like you to believe.

    •  Wondered about his current status myself (6+ / 0-)

      I have found:

Star Scientific Inc. said CEO Jonnie R. Williams and president Paul Perito resigned following today's [12/27/13] shareholder meeting in Washington. Their intentions were announced last month.

Both will stay on with the Glen Allen-based company for another year to help with litigation and product development.

But he may still end up under the bus

An article published in the Fredricksburg Freelance Star newspaper in January of 1981,  discusses the collapse of Colonial Opticians, an eye glass business Williams owned.

The article reports that Williams abandoned the failing business by skipping town and leaving behind a $45,000 loan he still owed to the Small Business Administration.

Goldman’s research yielded dozens of articles linking Williams to a pattern of selling a big idea, inflating its worth and then skipping out on the business before it collapses. The articles reference dealings in car sales, optometry, laser surgery, pharmaceuticals and experimenting with tobacco products with medical benefits.
More recent news reports indicate that Williams has been helping prosecutors in their investigation of Bob McDonnell, giving them a very different story than the Governor.  Goldman says given Williams’ past, prosecutors should be rethinking their strategy.

      •  Can't make an omelet without breaking eggs! (4+ / 0-)

This guy JW seems pretty shady.  Now it would seem the governor of Virginia and his wife got caught up in the shenanigans.

I can't help but wonder why the governor didn't check up on his associates, particularly where money is involved.  The governor certainly has resources at this disposal to do such checking.

Maybe there was some checking, and it showed a history of failed businesses.  Sure, but this guy is offering us lots of money for campaigning.  And it is an article of faith among the high and mighty: you can't make a big money omelet without breaking a few nest eggs.
