  •  Certainly drugs can be over used or (4+ / 0-)

misused, but my parents grew up in a time with almost no drugs, including vaccinations.  I grew up in a time with very few drugs and limited vaccinations (none for polio, for example).  Many, many people died prematurely of infectious diseases and other conditions that are treatable today.  All of us benefit from the decline in infectious diseases due to vaccinations.  We take it for granted, but 100 years ago most families lost a child or two or more to an infectious disease.

I'm in my 70's and take nothing but vitamins and an occasional ibuprofen or acetaminophen, but I have family members who need modern drugs and likely would have died years ago without them.

Having said all that, I share your concern about the "chemical soup" problem, which has escalated in the past couple of decades as has the mis- or over- use of drugs that affect basic physiological processes and therefore have a shocking array of side effects, both known and unknown.
