  •  Assad is not within his rights (4+ / 0-)

To commit war crimes. He is a war criminal and a thug and has no legitimacy as a leader.  He is no different from Radovan Karadzic, who was forced to step down as President and leader of the Bosnian Serb Republic, before the Dayton Peace Treaty went into effect, which ended the war in Bosnia.  I just hope he ends up rotting in a cell in The Hague like many other war criminals.

      to commit war crimes either.

Not while we're running the show.

          •  Every single war crime will not (0+ / 0-)

But leadership on both sides, who ordered the war crimes, need to be held responsible.  I put most of the responsibility on Assad because it was his forces who began by firing on and killing peaceful demonstrators, which caused the war.  He is also the leader of the country and should be held to a higher standard than some jihadist grunt who came to fight from another country.

            •  Your first sentence (0+ / 0-)

barely rates a tired chuckle.  As for the rest, while yes, there were peaceful demonstrators, the war against Assad had already been planned even then.

As for your last sentence, I'd still want to know exactly how much power Assad has in his own country.  After all, he inherited a nomenklatura that was supposed to pass from his dad to a brother of his.  And sorry, no, I don't think Vicious Murderer B gets kid-glove treatment simply because, unlike Vicious Murderer A, he was a "grunt" -- or because he was on our side.

Meanwhile, shall we clean our own house first?  No shortage of war criminals living the high life on American terra firma, dontcha know.

      •  1945 vs. 2014 (0+ / 0-)

I would hope that we would evolve from that point in time.  Doesn't change the fact that Assad is a war criminal and a thug.

You must have missed out on several recent wars.

Two wrongs don't make a right and just because we did things does not make what Assad is doing justifiable.

            •  Good question! (0+ / 0-)

But since you made the fatuous observation about our having "evolve[d] from that point in time," I wasn't about to let it go unchallenged.  Especially because it imputes a moral authority to us that -- sorry -- we just don't have.
