  •  I don't think youcan address this in Cartesian way (0+ / 0-)

This is not "it's either one thing or the other"

There is a sort of continuum from violent, aggressive stranger rape at one end to waking up in the morning thinking "I shouldn't have done that", or alternatively "Jeeze, what was I thinking?" at the other. ( By the way, this  is not restricted to women!)

It seems evident that the more inebriated one is, the more likely that one might wake up the following morning with second thoughts, or worse.

Now there are many ways of looking at this issue -  there is the person who deliberately encourages the other to drink to excess, while at the same time keeping their own drinking under control. Worse still is using roofies or GHB.

Then there is the case of both parties drinking to excess and having consensual sex, which would not have occurred if one of the parties was sober. I, for one have found myself in this position.

A third alternative is when both parties have been drinking heavily, and one party physically forces the other to have sex. (Somewhere between these last 2 is the charity fuck, where one person agrees to get some peace, no force involved but persistent non violent pressure)

But the common factor in these cases is excessive alcohol consumption.
So as simple guideline for anyone is  if you don't want to have unwanted or regretted sex, it is better not to drink too much. Very much in the way when walking in Times Square, it is sensible not to have your wallet or iPhone sticking out of your back pocket if you want to avoid being mugged. If you are going to a party, or singles bar or whatever, where people are there to hook up, it makes sense not to drink to the point where you are no longer able to control your actions or circumstances.

This is not to give a carte blanche to Ohio school footballers, who obviously were guilty - but to highlight each individuals responsibility to be aware of their situation.

I guess I am just repeating what the diarist has already said,  but in a slightly different way.

    I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then.
