  •  Nah. It's just from God's P.O.V. (10+ / 0-)

Earth is a pretty damn small target. Besides, it ain't who you smite, it's the smiting itself that is the message.

    •  Besides, sometimes He can't even hit Earth! (12+ / 0-)

Remember those comets ran into Jupiter a while back? 18 July, 1994?

Well, on 17 July Brazil won the world cup. God bet on Italy, boy was He pissed.

      •  Sometimes smite just happens. (0+ / 0-)

These phenomena are pretty widespread, with a lot of collateral damage if gawd is targeting gays and abortionists.  Given the widespread nature of these "acts", it is more likely that they are in retaliation for our poisoning the planet.

Perhaps the new progressive mantra should be "If God is punishing us for anything, it's probably for poisoning the planet."

        •  It's just as if the smite hit the fan (0+ / 0-)

and is not all hitting the evil gays and abortionists.  So maybe it really is God's way of telling us to lay off the carbon.

Real plastic here; none of that new synthetic stuff made from chicken feathers. By the morning of 9/12/2001 the people of NYC had won the War on Terror.

        •  Well, it all goes back to the *real* story (0+ / 0-)

          of Genesis.

You see, God admitted that he fucked up in making man.
He tried to fix his mistake by introducing man to meat, hoping that when man used an implement that he taught man to make to cut the meat, man would cut himself deeply and become extinct. If that failed, it was hoped that man would kill man off and become extinct.

When that failed, God gave man fire, in the hope that man would burn himself into extinction. It got a bit hairy at that point for a bit.

Then, when that failed, God gave man the bow and arrow, to no avail.

So, God gave man metalworking, hoping that man's warlike ways would result in extinction. Alas, that did not come to pass, for man begat more than could become rapidly extinct.

So, God gave man oil and NUCLEAR FIRE...
The jury's still out on that one.
One or both should do the trick.

        •  I'm reminded of a movie line.... (0+ / 0-)

In Angels and Demons, the hired gun responds to a Cardinal he's about to kill with something that should probably be the mantra of the GOP:

"Father, if God has issues, it won't be with what I've done.  It will be with what I'm about to do."

        •  so so sorry (0+ / 0-)

I got here too late to up-point this.  so doing it this way instead.

Thank you so much.  The next time I hear some Tea-publican waxing eloquent on gays I'll toss this one at her/him.

      •  I guess that means there must have been gays on (0+ / 0-)

Jupiter, so we HAVE confirmed life on other planets.

    •  So maybe Sodom and Gomorrah (3+ / 0-)

Then. Smiting kids andbthe elderly, plus wiping whole towns of the earth.
What an pathetic human she is.
I hate people that say they KNOW why gawd does these things.

      •  Well, yeah. But we gotta know why. (2+ / 0-)

Have you watched Rachel Maddow lately? That George Washington Bridge got shut down for four days, and every time she talks about it she points out that we still don't know WHY! People speculate when they don't know why. People won't accept "dunno" as an answer, nor will they accept, "That's just the way it goes" even when that's the truth.

        Smite happens.

Sooner or later (generally sooner) somebody's gonna explain why. Love em or hate em, it doesn't matter, because Enquiring minds want to know.

vengeful, and spiteful, and not even caring who he vents upon.  None of that namby-pamby Love stuff.

Disgusting to hear this bronze-age theology.

      •  "I distrust (0+ / 0-)

those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires."  - - Susan B. Anthony.

Likewise, I distrust those people who know so well who God hates because I notice the hated always coincide with who the hater hates as well.   And isn't that convenient?

    •  "...it's the smiting itself..." (0+ / 0-)

Sounds like the US military's view of drone strikes.

Or just that of the Assassin-in-Chief?
