    -- is that gay characters have become mainstreamed.  

    Sure, TV shows will still unleash the occasional shock kiss between two men who appeared to be straight... (Hi REVENGE) but those days will eventually end.

    What I hope that doesn't happen is the segregation thing.  That 'now that we've done that we don't have to anymore because it no longer breaks any ground' thing.

      What will eventually happen (and is happening now) is that whether a character is gay or not will only be mentioned if it's relevant to the story. A good example was a recent episode of Elementary. When it was mentioned that Moriarty was a skilled seductress, the FBI agent who was assigned to guard her noted he'd been carefully vetted for the position, allowing Holmes to immediately realize he was gay. Everyone else was "Yeah, that was smart on the part of the Bureau"...and that was it. The character's sexuality had no other relevance, and so there was no other mention of it and it didn't effect the rest of the episode. Which is, ideally, the way the world should work.
