It will move from being just political tolerance to enduring acceptance.

Its unlikely to ever truly happen, but as far as story telling goes, if you have been a gay man who has been out since 1994 (I just realized its my 20th anniversary of being out!) and you have seen  a ton of movies at gay festivals, you want something more than the same stories over and over again. Sometimes - a small movie like Weekend can change your mind, but that movie actually proves the point. The real story wasn't what you thought it would be.

I want to see complex story telling

complex stories from the mass media.

      •  In general no, but they do get far more than (1+ / 0-)

        we do

Meaning, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest to use a 70s example

        Or Dog Day Afternoon

Or more recently a movie  like There Will Be Blood or last year may be a film like Her.

They are out there, but not the norm

THey are even less likely to occur with gay characters

a first rate movie with prominent gay characters in it. If that ever happens, it probably won't about being gay.

Brokeback Mountain was very well made, but it was not a substantial story.

I would imagine it would be a subplot in some way of the story, but not the story

Meaning that it somehow factors in, but ultimately not the story itself.

            I agree about Brokeback Mountain.

We simply have yet to see  a movie that's like a One Flew OVer the Cuckoos nest with a gay character in the leading role

There are some good ones out there, but nothing truly transformative or a masterpiece.
