And there is pretty much no network news that doesn't completely stop reporting everything if there is a celebrity story unfolding.

CNN already has an hour-long documentary lined up to air tonight at 10pm which is about Justin Bieber and his fall from grace.

    •  And? (0+ / 0-)

You're not seriously trying to minimize this because "they all do it!", are you?

This all started with "what the Republicans did to language".

      •  Am I minimizing it? (6+ / 0-)

I would think that the fact that CNN has an hour-long doc about Bieber locked and loaded for 10pm tonight - airing 42 hours after the guys was arrested for a DUI - which is a dime a dozen crime in this country - would amplify rather than minimize the point that the media in this country is completely off of the rails.

There's no hour-long documentary ready to go covering the OxFam story that 85 people hold the same amount of wealth as the poorest 3.5 Billion people on earth.  No one is going out and profiling those 85 people and airing a documentary about how that nightmare has come to be.

But Justin Bieber has a felony egging charge and then a DUI and the newsroom scrambles to produce a documentary about him.  That's really fucked up.

        •  Of course it's fucked up! (0+ / 0-)

So when do we quit trying to find ways to justify it with shades of "That's just how it is!" and instead try to come up with ways to actually do something about it?

We can't change a thing, pointing out how "they all do it". That's a given, inclusiveheart! We know they all do it. The big problem here is that we also know why they do it, and yet we let ourselves actively descend into the place where we just keep going round and round with "but...but....look what they're doing HERE. And HERE. And HERE....! It's too big for us!"

Too big to fail? That kind of thing pisses me off.

All I'm saying is that we have got to get past that point. This propaganda machine has to be turned off or at least dialed back to its appropriate reason for being at all--reporting actual, important, timely, relevant news. And we have to start somewhere, and we have GOT TO do it soon.

          •  None of what I've said is a justification. (2+ / 0-)

Your seem to want to shut down any possible discussions about what the roots of this problem are.

Being outraged and getting all pissed off at Andrea Mitchell won't get you anywhere near fixing this problem.

            •  But it is. It justifies it in (0+ / 0-)

that it makes an excuse for it. Essentially what your argument boils down to is a variant of "They're too big, so write some more Concern Letters and hope for the best".

And actually, what "shuts down discussion" on this is waving it away with a "But They All Do It!". So please don't even try to go there. If I was trying to "shut this down", we wouldn't still be talking about it.

And frankly, you should be more outraged and more pissed off than you appear to be. This machine is, literally, dividing a nation of hundreds of millions. Do you or do you not want to see that continue?

This all started with "what the Republicans did to language".

like you do in order to be taken seriously?

"You're with us or against us" affront to my comments about this issue is ridiculous.

Most of the time when someone doesn't get what I'm trying to say on this blog, I figure that I haven't done a good enough job at communicating my thoughts effectively.  Sadly, in this case, I think that you are reading me wrong.  I know that you are ascribing motives that I do not have even after I have made it clear that I am not justifying the current state of our media, for instance.

                Enjoy your freak out.

          •  So, what are you going to do? (1+ / 0-)

I admire your fire, but how are you going to "fix it"?  You aren't really offering up any solutions, so what do you propose?

Aside from the fact that I think that the networks and pundits are aware that a vast majority of their viewers would WANT them to cut away from a serious policy discussion or round table discussion to cover big national news, including celebrity "news," what would you DO instead of just getting mad?  Throw away the TV?  Boycott the advertisers?   Send peppered letters to Mitchell?

From my perspective, the only thing you can really do is turn the channel to, perhaps, more "serious" pundit shows less likely to file away when celebrity news hits (i.e. PBS Newshour, Charlie Rose (when he interviews a politician), Current TV, Two Young Turks, etc.)

        •  Fucked up yes, (0+ / 0-)

but remember, these are all corporate owned entities that don't want us seeing real news, they'd much rather bring us bread and circuses to keep the masses stupid, clued into utterly useless information, docile and divorced from the political processes that might loosen their control on the levers of power. But really, those mindless fuckers bringing us an hour on a narcissistic teenager of questionable talent really is off the rails. These are our airways & and we should be able to   fire these assholes for perpetuating the dumbing down of what's left of the American Electorate. Until we take to the streets like the ordinary citizens in Kiev, oust our corporate owned government and run these stupid fuckers ruling our airwaves out of town, we're only going to get more of the same & worse. If we want our country back, we're going to have to take it back.
