a Pentagon simulation that games a war against Iran in the Persian Gulf. The Iranians (in the game) deployed speedboats and other harassment techniques to immobilize and damage US ships. The game, IIRC, was halted after the first round because the Iranians were winning.

Did that while at CENTCOM.   navy not happy, at all.

    •  Wargaming Iraq in 2002. The "red" commander (0+ / 0-)

knew he was out-muscled so he went asymmetrical: motorcycle messengers and old-school light signals (avoiding elec comm intercepts), units breaking up into small, mobile groups (instead of static WWII formations) and the speedboat attacks in the Gulf.

Marine Corps Lieutenant General Paul K. Van Riper trashed the traditional tactics Blue force so badly that the simulation referees reset the exercise (re-floating all the sunken ships) and forbade Van Riper from doing all that unfair stuff.  "Just follow the script while Blue wins." He resigned from the exercise.

Blue won a convincing victory.  We invaded Iraq the way we did partially on this "victory."
