    The right has often said, "No more Souters!" They probably also say, "No more Kennedys!" They are going to want someone with a well-established conservative track record. Fortunately, that makes our job easier, because usually such clear-cut, dyed-in-the-wool right wingers have a few extremist opinions under their belts as well.

      My guess is that Rove will see a highly contentious ideological pick as a net positive for Republicans, even if Democrats manage to peel off six senators to defeat him.

      Remember:  given the ideological makeup of the country, Rove has always calculated that greater polarization works in their favor.

      So the chances of a "consensus pick" will be near zero if you ask me.

      I do expect the pick to be someone of unquestioned legal credentials, not a hack, which will make things tougher.

      Whatever the case, it'll be ugly.

      Yea, I'm 99 percent that's how it will go.

      However, it's well worth lobbying even moderate Republicans to try to force their hand....
