  •  Make and model # (5+ / 0-)

will be a big help in answering your question.
What is it doing? If it's just squealing, a little grease will take care of it. Basically, you need to take the front panel off. Usually two screws at the base. You will then see how the dryer belt runs around the tub. Where the belt rides on the lower pulley is spring loaded. Pull back on this pulley to release the belt.  Then when you look inside the tub you will see some (three?) screw heads in the center. Remove them and the tub will be able to be taken out. What you will see after the tub is removed is a ball that rides in a socket. Lift straight up to remove. If you see no damage, clean and apply white grease liberally. Reverse order to put back together. (Good luck on trying to get those (three?) screws back! Sounds worse than it really is.

and the model number sticker says ... gobbledygook. Front cover???

...but I don't sleep much either. Here's what the Frigidaire website says:

Where can I find my dryer’s model and serial number?
The dryer serial plate is located on the door of the dryer and can be seen when the door is opened. It’s always a good idea to record these numbers and the date of purchase, as well as to save your receipt.
No help when the code gets rubbed off, right? So go here:
and see if one of these looks like yours. If it's an older unit than they show, go here: to Appliance Parts Pros and see if you can click thru to one that looks like yours. (PS: helps to tell us if gas or electric- see diagrams of a typical electric model of that series here) Once you think you have it identified, study ALL the diagrams so you see how the parts go together - it helps to print them out, I always do!

Now, without actually looking at it, the best I can add is my 2c. A "thump" can usually be diagnosed only by seeing the drum roll - which means you have to remove the front panel. Usual precautions, please, no power to the unit, LOOK first, even take pics if you're not sure or have never done it. If you follow LIcenters advice you can't go wrong - figure out how to remove that front panel and you're halfway there. Drums usually ride on a bearing at the back and "glides" mounted on the front panel, so the drum will sag a bit, no problem.

Examine the front panel to see what shape the glides are in, in case any have worn out. Now grasp the drum by the opening and turn it to see if you can feel a thump - with the belt ON. It may give a bit of resistance, but persist. Make a couple revolutions. If you don't feel a "flat spot" somewhere, you'll have to pull the belt per LIcenter's note, and do it again without the belt, by supporting the drum from the opening in front. If you STILL don't feel a flat spot, lift the drum out of the bearing and remove it. Don't forget pics!

Examine the drive mechanism - especially the pulley the belt rides in. You're looking for damage, something odd, something out of place. Things should be SMOOTH - and don't forget the drum itself, especially the front opening where it rides on the glides; any bent, chipped, or warped spot can cause a thump.

At that point, if you aren't sure what's causing it, I'd at least replace the glides, belt and bearing. Or pay a service call if the dryer's not too old and worth putting a couple hundred into it. (Ours is only 30-some years old and still works fine, but YMMV) Or, you can PM me and I'll try to help further (be prepared to send me pics!) - I've done a few in my time, even gas burner/ignitor replacements. It's not rocket science...

it still has knobs just above the door, not digital wizardry.

If I can figure out how I'll try and get pics, but likely it'll be late Sunday...

              •  If it is thumping, chances are very good (1+ / 0-)

it is not the rear bearing. Here is a video for changing the front bearing which is most likely your problem.
You actually have the same dryer as I have, sept yours is a little newer. My old age is showing as I forgot you needed to lift the top in order to remove the two front panel screws. I'm betting the drum weld is riding over the broken front bearing, and that is the thumping you are hearing.

If you plan on doing this yourself. Pick up a new belt, and install too. Those thing break without any warning.

                    GO HERE

                    Complete diagrams, parts lists, etc.

And kudos to LIcanter for the update, nice catch on the weld for the drum, I had forgot that - the front of the drum rides on 2 glide strips, they are listed on that page too..

I agree, do the belt while it's off (save the old belt for an emergency)... and there are sites that show disassembly and repairs step by step.

LMK if you need further help.

                    •  will do; may tackle it this pm late (0+ / 0-)

as it's freezing & laundry's backed up. Sigh. Local parts sources may be scarcer than I like....
