    Matt's mixture of innocent cockiness with moments of absolutely clear seriousness worked well, I felt.

    There has to be some measure of humor or less-than-seriousness - overt or not - to make this show attractive, IMHO.

      I liked the balance in David Tennant's Tenth Doctor a little bit more than Smith's Eleventh.

      The criticism of the Tenth Doctor was that he was basically a walking, talking Deus ex machina, but I found it interesting that there was always an underlying sadness to the character. He was lonely, and unhappy that he was lonely. Even with hs wonderous powers to move across time and space doing great deeds, there were still some things he couldn't fix.

        but, there were happy social times, as well.

        Guess they wanted to bring the audience up a bit after the prior experience (especially with what happened to the prior companion).
