  •  Can we use a different word than Apartheid? (1+ / 0-)

Inaccurately comparing everything to Apartheid (or slavery, or the Holocaust) is something the right-wing does. Let's not normalize comparisons of that sort.

i understand what you are saying about inappropriate comparisons made to slavery or the holocaust.

But here you have white people creating their own rich enclave separate from the indigenous Black African people. This is how apartheid is defined:

a former social system in South Africa in which black people and people from other racial groups did not have the same political and economic rights as white people and were forced to live separately from white people
      •  No. Apartheid is fundamentally based on race. (2+ / 0-)

There is no legal separation of people of different racial or ethnic groups in this project.

In your article, you use the word rich 18 times, the word poor 4 times, the variations on the words race, ethinic, white and black a combined total of zero times.

You are clearly talking about class, not race, and as such are making an inaccurate comparison between this project and Apartheid.

What makes you think this is an exclusively "white" development? Corruption and other factors such as historic tribal structures mean there are many rich Nigerians who can afford such housing. Lagos's "market women" are fierce entrepreneurs (in the south of Nigeria women are generally very well educated and involved in business, the professions and politics).

There is also a growing band of ex-patriot Chinese who have been raiding Africa's natural resources to feed their industries with a ruthlessness on a par with the Belgians.

We will work, we will play, we will laugh, we will live. We will not waste one moment, nor sacrifice one bit of our freedom, because of fear.

      •  BTW (0+ / 0-)

The "dictionary definition" is crude and incomplete without reference to the concept of the Homelands where, in the theory of the system, the tribal members had rights. Note that tribe, not race.

As would be expected from an American dictionary, it is skewed very much towards a "Jim Crow" view of the system as many are only aware of the "petty apartheid" restrictions like separate beaches, benches and buses.

We will work, we will play, we will laugh, we will live. We will not waste one moment, nor sacrifice one bit of our freedom, because of fear.
