In our Puget Sound decade we scored a rental unimproved boaters' shack on salt water. The picture window faced the Olympic Mountains beyond the Sound and a small nature tidal nature reserve in the foreground. There were half a dozen Bald Eagles nesting in the neighborhood including one tree on "our" property.

One afternoon there were some hang gliders cavorting over the bluffs opposite us in view of the picture window, so I grabbed the binocs to have a closer look.

Then I spotted a seagull in the distance laboriously winging toward my right behind carrying a really big fish. I told Herself standing beside me what I was seeing, but as a Great Lakes son who's never in my 2/3 century life lived out of sight of seagulls, a contradiction was forming in my mind because I didn't remember seagulls carrying

Something had smashed down into my scene and everything was falling so I panned down.

Seagull was tumbling. Seagull's captured fish was tumbling. Big black collider that had flashes of white at each end was tumbling.

Instantly collider straightened out, it was a bald eagle, then once oriented it pulled in its wings to torpedo straight down, passed the still flailing seagull, grabbed the flailing fish, and took off toward my upper right shoulder toward its nest.

Soon the seagull was nipping at the Bald Eagle's tail feathers in between screeching, but to no avail.

Seagull turned out to be actually an osprey.

I'm thinking about Ben Franklin and the US's national bird and wondering....
